Unidentified human remains were discovered Thursday afternoon in a wooded area near Tennessee Street and South 13th Street in Paducah.

McCracken County Coroner Amanda Melton confirmed that the discovery was made at approximately 12:25 p.m. after contractors working in the area alerted authorities. Melton said an autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Louisville, though it may take time before additional information — including identity or cause of death — is available due to the state of decomposition.

Paducah Police Public Engagement Officer Blake Quinn said the department is actively conducting a death investigation at the site. Officers were called to the scene after reports that a deceased individual had been found on the property.

The remains were described as being in a severe state of decomposition.
