Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield has officially opened Genesis Medical Detox, an eight-bed medical detoxification unit designed to help individuals safely withdraw from alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opiates. The specialized unit, located on the hospital’s fourth floor, celebrated its grand opening this week and is already projected to serve a high volume of patients.

Genesis Medical Detox is expected to operate at 80% capacity, averaging 40 admissions per month, with most patients staying between five and seven days. The program accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and most commercial insurance, broadening access to care across the region.

Founded in 2019 and already operating in Tennessee, Texas, and Alabama, Genesis Medical Detox is grounded in a compassion-forward approach and aims to connect individuals directly to treatment programs following detox. CEO and founder Peter Dacchille and COO Timothy Brennan both have personal histories of recovery from substance use disorder, shaping the organization’s mission to bridge gaps in addiction treatment.

JPMC CEO Dave Anderson said the new unit will play a vital role not just in Graves County, but throughout western Kentucky and beyond.

“This unit will serve our local community, but reach as far as Nashville, Lexington, and Memphis,” said Anderson. “It helps address the shortage of addiction intervention resources across the country.”

The hospital invested $250,000 to repurpose available space for the detox unit. The opening aligns with the expansion of JPMC’s behavioral health services, with Samantha Crittendon, director of senior behavioral health, now taking leadership of the Genesis unit as well.

To make services more accessible, Genesis will transport patients from up to two-and-a-half hours away—and may even arrange special accommodations for those outside that radius. The goal is to ensure no one is turned away when seeking help.

Medical professionals emphasized that attempting detox at home can be dangerous. 24-hour medical supervision is often necessary due to potential complications, including seizures. Medically supervised detox also helps reduce the physical stress and discomfort that often prevents individuals from seeking treatment.

Genesis is designed to be the first step in a holistic recovery journey, ensuring patients safely complete detox and are then referred to treatment centers for ongoing rehabilitation.

Local healthcare leaders say the program will provide essential support for individuals battling addiction — and has the potential to become a regional hub for recovery throughout western Kentucky.
