Kentucky Legal Aid will host a series of free consumer law clinics over the next two months to help survivors of the December 2021 western Kentucky tornadoes address ongoing financial and legal challenges.
The disaster relief clinics will be held in 15 impacted counties: Barren, Caldwell, Christian, Fulton, Graves, Hart, Hickman, Hopkins, Logan, Lyon, Marshall, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Taylor and Warren.
According to Kristy Vick-Stratton, lead disaster response attorney for Kentucky Legal Aid, legal assistance is often an overlooked but critical component of long-term recovery.
“A lot of times, people don’t realize that there’s a legal component to their issue. We’ll walk through everything,” Vick-Stratton said. “Right after a disaster, there’s such a large influx of people wanting to help, but those long-term needs can be overlooked. We’re just wanting people to know that the assistance is still available for them.”
Clinics will provide education, brief legal advice and follow-up representation for eligible survivors. Participants must have resided in one of the tornado-impacted counties in December 2021 and meet Kentucky Legal Aid’s acceptance guidelines.
Pre-registration is preferred, though walk-ins will be accepted. Survivors can call 877-782-4219 for more information or to register.
