A local bookstore in Murray is encouraging readers to make books part of their New Year’s resolutions.

Bolin Books, a family-owned used bookstore that opened in fall 2022, says the start of a new year is a perfect time to be more intentional about how free time is spent. Owner Wesley Bolin says he hopes to see people trade screen time for page time in 2026.

“The new year is a great time to set resolutions and be more intentional with free time,” Bolin said. “I want to have less screen time and more page time this year. If you can do that and get away from screens, I think that will be a great start to 2026.”

Bolin says reading helps people gain a broader understanding of the world around them by exposing readers to different perspectives.

“As kids, the first time we read a fiction book, we’re seeing someone else’s perspective and learning that other people are different than us and gaining empathy for other people,” he said.

He adds that readers don’t need to limit themselves to specific genres or difficult material to benefit.

“Any kind of reading one wants to engage in is going to be good for them,” Bolin said. “You need to find a book that you’re going to feel love for and helps you recapture the joy of reading.”

Bolin says he’s thankful to be part of a community that values reading, literacy, and supporting local businesses.
